What is Chiropractic?

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health care profession focused on the musculoskeletal and nervous systems and their effects on overall health. Chiropractors use a drug-free, hands-on approach to caring for their patients. This process involves patient history, examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors are trained in spinal manipulation/adjustment and are qualified to give exercise, nutrition and lifestyle counselling as required.

What Does Chiropractic Treat?

Chiropractic care is available to people of all ages from the newborn to the elderly. A large variety of conditions are treatable using Chiropractic. While chiropractors are well known for their ability to care for conditions related to headaches, back and neck pain they also often work with disorders of the various joints and muscles of the body as well as the nervous system. Since our body structure affects
our body function, many aspects of our health are influenced by the state of these systems. Chiropractors also educate patients on healthy diet, exercise and lifestyle habits by teaching how to eat, think and move according to our natural design.

How is a Chiropractic Treatment Done?

Chiropractic adjustments or manipulations is are manual procedures that utilize the highly refined skills of the chiropractor, developed during 4 years of intensive chiropractic training. The chiropractor typically uses his or her hands or an instrument to manipulate the joints of the body, particularly the spine, in order to enhance or restore joint function. This often helps resolve joint inflammation and reduces the patient’s pain. Chiropractic manipulation is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort. The chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of the patient. Patients often note positive changes in their symptoms immediately following treatment.

Is Chiropractic Safe?

Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest and non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of musculoskeletal complaints. Although chiropractic has an excellent record of safety, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. However, the risks associated with chiropractic are very small. While many patients experience immediate relief following treatment, some may experience mild discomfort similar to what might be experienced following extensive physical activity. This soreness or aching typically fades within 24 hours.

Is Chiropractic ongoing?

Due to the hands-on nature of chiropractic it is often necessary to return several times for treatment. This allows the chiropractor to properly correct or improve your condition. The number of visits will depend on your condition and your personal goals. This will be discussed on your second visit. In addition to in-office treatment your chiropractor will suggest certain things that you can do at home
that will aid in accomplishing your health goals. Ultimately you can return as much or as little as you like.
