WHAT IS MASSAGE THERAPY?

Massage therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body including muscles, connective tissues, tendons, ligaments and joints.

Treatments help to alleviate soft tissue discomfort associated with everyday and occupational stresses, muscular over-use and many chronic pain conditions.

Our registered massage therapists (R.M.T’s) improve stress management and are widely used to relieve pain caused by chronic tension, to improve circulation, to aid nerve conduction, to increase flexibility in the joints and reduce mental and physical fatigue. Massage therapy will relieve muscle tightness especially in the back and neck area where many people retain tension.

Massage therapy is often used along with chiropractic care and/or laser therapy to improve many musculoskeletal conditions and to improve a person’s overall health and wellness. Our registered massage therapists work directly with Dr. Brett Davey on many cases to maximize patient results.

What to expect

The first time you come into our office for a massage, you will be asked to fill out a confidential general information sheet. Your registered massage therapist will then ask you some questions to get a good understanding of what type of treatment you require. For a body massage you will be asked to undress to your underwear. You will however be fully covered during the entire massage except for the area being worked on.

You will relax on a massage table that is designed for comfort and stability. Pillows and blankets will be used to ensure maximum comfort and relaxation during your massage. The room will be warm with quite gentle music playing in the background. Massage oil will be used to avoid friction and sooth muscles.

The massage will start gently to calm you nervous system and begin to release superficial tension. Gradually, your massage therapist will work more deeply into the tissue and address certain areas.

Your massage therapist will help you understand that ultimately your body has the capacity to heal itself and will work with you to learn how you can become a part of this healing process.

Make yourself comfortable and relax. Your registered massage therapist may move or adjust your position during the massage and will let you know how to position yourself throughout the massage.

If you are uncomfortable at any time you are encouraged to let your massage therapist know and they will assist you in assuming a more relaxed position. If you would like to talk with your massage therapist it is welcome, however, many prefer to simply close their eyes, relax and rest. Some even fall asleep.
